VIDALIA, La. – Sibley senior pitcher Cole Reynolds held Vidalia to three hits, striking out 12 as the Raiders defeated Vidalia 8-0 in the second round of the Class 2A baseball playoffs.
&uot;That guy just dominated us,&uot;&160;said Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir. &uot;He did a good job of locating his pitches.
Vidalia ends its season at 21-9.
Reynolds (12-2) faced only four batters over the minimum.
&uot;We knew they had a good club and matched up well with us,&uot;&160;Reynolds said. &uot;I would have just been happy with squeaking one out.&uot;
Reynolds’ fastball was timed at 88 miles per hour.
&uot;I was hitting my spots well,&uot; Reynolds said. &uot;And when we score first, it always puts me at ease.&uot;
Sibley, 28-5, scored three runs in the first inning as Reynolds doubled with two men out. Demetrius Myles singled, Gregg Williams reached on an error and Mitchell Person doubled.
&uot;I think that went a big way toward the outcome,&uot; said Sibley coach Bob Gray.
&uot;That two-out inning took a little wind out of our sails,&uot; Hoffpauir said.
The Raiders added two in the fourth as Person walked and Luke Miller homered.
The final three Sibley runs came in the fifth as Reynolds and Williams singled, and Person followed with a single and cleared the bases on two errors.
Vidalia’s hits were singles by Adam Probst, Rod Donald and Bryan Bennett.
Sibley, which brought a .472 team batting average into the game, totaled eight hits.
Sibley finished 13-13 last year and was beaten out in the first round of the playoffs.
Playing their last game for the Vikings were seniors Donald, Probst, Matt Dillon, Collin Taunton, Kevin Laird, Justin Stickland, Terrell Williams and Jason Exelby.
&uot;The hardest part is seeing it end for the seniors, especially when they play as hard as these guys have,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;They are as good as any group I’ve had.
Sibley faces St. Frederick, which defeated Sacred Heart 5-3.
&uot;Vidalia has a first-rate baseball program,&uot;&160;Gray said. &uot;We enjoyed our trip and game here. Vidalia has first-class fans.&uot;
