Briarfield, CHA lead South A tourney

Briarfield’s and Chamberlain Hunt’s tennis teams had strong showings Tuesday at the MPSA&160;South A State Tournament at Duncan Park and the Trinity School courts.
Briarfield will be in the finals in seven of the nine brackets and CHA has four finalists, all of whom will play Briarfield.
Briarfield’s No. 1 boys singles player Gabe Gattle advanced to the finals with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over River Oaks’s Tyler Metzger in a semifinals match
Gattle will play CHA’s Ian Doherty, who beat Presbyterian Christian’s Morris Liddell 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.
The No. 2 boys singles finals will be another Briarfield-CHA battle as Matthew Brown will take on Asher Rosenberg.
Brown won a tough match over PCS’s Chandler Strain 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals while Rosenberg defeated Glenbrook’s Elliot Epperson 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 1 boys doubles finals will have yet another contest between CHA and Briarfield.
CHA’s Cass Dodgen and Daniel McFatter routed Trinity’s Brett Mount and Sam Kirby 6-0, 6-0 while Briarfield’s Philip Tomlinson and Pete Lensing defeated Glenbrook’s Marshall Harper and Chip Spurlock 6-1, 6-3.
The fourth CHA-Briarfield battle will take place in the No. 2 boys doubles.
Briarfield’s Nicholas Hopkins and Will Mullen defeated River Oaks’ Josh Creel and Thomas Taylor 6-2, 6-0 and CHA’s Matthew Burrell and Jordan Hammond defeated PCS’s Cory Williams and Justin Crees 6-2, 6-3.
In the No. 1 girls doubles semifinals, Huntington’s Sara Ashmore and Mary-Ella Green easily defeated Hartley Domergue and Sarah Harris of PCS 6-1, 6-2.
Briarfield’s Jackie Brown and Sarah Fortenberry defeated Trinity’s Lauren Tanner and Sara Greer 7-5, 6-4.
The No. 2 girls doubles finals will be between the two area teams and tournament co-hosts, Trinity and Huntington.
Trinity’s Lindsey Hunt and Pheobe Winters defeated FA’s Erin Reynolds and Leslie Baldwin in the three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Huntington’s Rachel Anders and Katie Cole defeated Briarfield’s Katie Brown and Marti Dukes 6-1, 6-1.
&uot;I’m just proud of them,&uot; said Huntington tennis coach Emily Guida. &uot;They peaked at the right time. They saved their energy for this tournament.
&uot;If they play this way tomorrow like they did today, they have a good chance to win.&uot;
In the mixed doubles semifinals, Huntington’s Bridget Anders and Tom Terry Milliken defeated Glenbrook’s Lauren Ritchie and Asa McCoy 6-0, 6-2 and Tallulah’s Kristie Headley and Cole Williams defeated Briarfield’s Mindy Oswalt and Garrett Frith 7-6 (5), 6-1.
The finals will be held today at Trinity School tennis courts beginning at 9 a.m.
