Cathedral High’s golf team begins play in the Class 2A State Tournament today at Forest Country Club in Forest.
&uot;This is the one we planned on being at at the start of the season,&uot; said Cathedral coach Terry Moffett.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday.
Cathedral won the Class 1A state championship last year and is playing in its first 2A state tournament.
Among the teams Cathedral will be up against are Newton, which finished second to the Green Wave in the district tournament, and St. John.
&uot;St. John’s won 2A for four or five years in a row,&uot; Moffett said. &uot;They won the Forest Invitational. They’ve played on this course more than twice.&uot;
As to the course Cathedral is playing on, Moffett said. &uot;It’s a tight course. We’ll have to drive the ball straight. The two big factors will be chipping and putting.&uot;
Despite playing in the 2A state tournament for the first time, Moffett believes his team has a good shot at victory.
&uot;Is this team good enough? I don’t know. We’ll just find out,&uot; Moffett said.
&uot;If we can get two scores of 85 or less from Christopher Martin and Mark Carter, then I really like our chances.&uot;
In addition to Cathedral playing in the Class 2A State Tournament, Natchez High is competing in the Class 5A Tournament at Briarwood Country Club in Meridian.
Natchez won its district in Jackson last week. Brandon Miller shot an 87 to lead the Bulldogs last week, while Betsy Powell had a 91.
