Reactions to Indiana University keeping Bobby Knight on as head basketball coach were mixed around Natchez Monday.
Penn Jones said he thinks Knight should have been fired.
&uot;He is an embarrassment to basketball and to the university,&uot; Jones said. &uot;What he did to some of his players and to the sports information director is assault and battery.&uot;
Steve Bowlin of Natchez has been a longtime fan of Knight.
&uot;I think he’s done more good than harm. I don’t think they should have done anything to him,&uot; Bowlin said.
Carlos Evers, athletic trainer at Alcorn, said Knight needs some kind of boundaries.
&uot;It’s time he needed to have some responsibilites for his actions,&uot; Evers said. &uot;Anybody other than Bobby Knight would’ve been fired.&uot;
Mike Bowlin of Natchez thinks Knight kept his job for a reason.
&uot;I think they gave it to him because he had his best recruiting class in 10 years, he said.&uot;
Chet Willis of Natchez said the sanctions are not too steep. Larry Hughes agreed with the punishment.
&uot;To see players treated like that is unfair,&uot; Hughes said. &uot;I don’t think he should’ve been fired, but I don’t agree with some of his coaching techniques.&uot;
