Natchez Alderman George &uot;Shake&uot;&160;Harden submitted paperwork Monday contesting his loss of this month’s Democratic primary and asking for a new election.

Harden lost his Ward 2 reelection campaign to his opponent Ricky Gray by 107 votes. He is contesting the election because he thinks &uot;a lot of fraud&uot; took place during the election.

&uot;Whatever is hidden in the dark will come to the light,&uot; he said.

During the election, Harden claims at least 85 absentee ballots were improperly cast by Ward 2 voters.

These ballots were not attached with an envelope showing the ballot application was properly mailed to the city clerk’s office.

For this reason, they should not have been counted, Harden’s petition/protest reads. Harden also thinks 72 people who voted in the election were not legitimate residents of Ward 2.

&uot;In fact some were not even residents of the City of Natchez, Adams County or the State of Mississippi,&uot; the petition/protest reads.

Gray said he had not heard of Harden’s protest until late Monday evening.

&uot;(The) only reaction I have is the people have spoken,&uot; he said.

Harden attached the names of people he believes voted questionably to his petition and submitted it to Gray and the members of Natchez’s Mississippi Municipal Democratic Executive Committee. The committee certified Gray as the winner election since he received 558 votes to Harden’s 451.

In a press release issued Monday, the committee said all its members and the candidates will be notified of the petition and a date and time for a meeting on the matter.

Committee president Jacquelyn Williams said she could not give further comment because members remain impartial. Complaints like this are common, she said.

&uot;Anytime someone loses and they think there are some improprieties (that took) place that is their right by law,&uot; Williams said.
