Macon captures state title

FERRIDAY, La. – Central Academy of Macon took home field advantage away from Trinity Episcopal Day School and Huntington High Saturday, taking home the MPSA&160;Single-A Softball State Tournament at Huntington High.

Macon defeated Huntington 28-0 in the championship game to finish unbeaten for the title.

Huntington managed only two hits off of Macon in the title game, singles by Lindsay Wagoner and Brandi Raley.

Macon scored 11 runs in the first inning and added three in the second and six in the third.

Trinity was eliminated by Macon and Huntington in two one-run games.

&uot;That’s very tough,&uot; said Trinity assistant coach Rick Kirby. &uot;You can go back and think of a number of things that happened that might have been the difference. We had some opportunities early in both games. The girls hit the ball, but the other teams made the plays. We didn’t get the runs when we needed them.&uot;

Rain delays forced the championship game to be played after 11 p.m.

&uot;That was tough because it kind of drug everything out,&uot; Kirby said.

In first round action, Trinity advanced past Newton County 21-0. Sarah Kirby was 4-for-4 with two triples. Ashley Kingsafer, Krista Mophett, Jessica Tannehill, Sara Greer and Amber Huff had three hits each

Trinty defeated Huntington 9-8 as Kirby, Tannehill and Greer had three hits each.

Macon Central defeated Claiborne to advance to face Trinity in the finals of the winner’s bracket, where Macon would beat Trinity in its last at-bat 6-5.

Trinity started out on fire against Macon Central with the first five Lady Saints reaching base, the first two, Kirby and Haley Hinton, on back-to-back triples.

Greer followed with a walk, and Huff followed her with a single that scored Hinton, which made the score 2-0 in favor of Trinity.

The Macon Central defense prevented further damage with a double play.

The Lady Saints held Macon in the bottom of the first, and came back with another run in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by Greer.

Lady Saint pitcher Huff held Macon once again in the bottom of the second, which paved the way for a two-run triple scoring Shay Netterville and Kingsafer.

However, Macon unloaded in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to go up 6-5.

Trinity, which won South State at Huntington last week, fell to Huntington 8-7.

Trinity tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh inning on hits by Smith andKingsafer, but Huntington scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a singled by Wagoner.

&uot;We left our heart and soul on the field,&uot; Kirby said. &uot;The girls used every bit of their energy.&uot;
