‘Good’ pitching leads El Toro to win

El Toro scored a quick five runs in the first inning and three pitchers combined for a one-hitter en route to an 8-0 win over Quality Glass Friday in Dixie Youth 9-10 action at Ballew-Bowlin Field.
The game was called after four innings due to heavy rain and lightning.
El Toro’s record improved to a perfect 8-0 while Quality Glass dropped to 3-5.
&uot;The kids played hard and hit the ball well,&uot; said El Toro assistant coach Mark Verucchi. &uot;The pitching was good and the defense was great. I’ve coached a long time and this team has the most potential.&uot;
El Toro started off the scoring with its five runs in the top of the first, led by Colby Verucchi’s two-run single that brought in Jordan Dossett and Lee Guedon.
Quality Glass had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded and nobody out. Matthew Freeman tried to score on a wild pitch, but was tagged out at home.
After Will McConnell was hit by a pitch to load the bases a second time, Floyd got Paul Delaney and Daniel Jenkins to strike out consecutively to end the threat.
Lee Guedon gave up one unearned run and no hits, struck out two and walked two in one inning on the mound.
&uot;The pitching’s been carrying us all year. I hope it carries us to the city championship,&uot; Verucchi said. &uot;The defense has been doing a great job all year long.&uot;
El Toro added three runs in the top of the third.
Quality Glass scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the bottom of the fourth.
Wells Middleton took the loss for Quality Glass, giving up five runs, two earned, on two hits, struck out three and walked three in two innings. Freeman gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits, struck out two and walked in two innings.
Friday’s game between Dr. Pepper and Dr. Bug was rained out and will be played today at 6 p.m., field conditions and/or weather permitting. If not, the game will be played next Wednesday.
The Dixie Youth 11-12 game at Carroll Jones Field between Whittington and B&K was suspended in the fifth inning with Whittington leading 8-3 and B&K going to bat in the bottom of the inning.
The remainder of that game will resume play today 4 p.m. followed by Stallone versus Huber at approximately 4:30.
