Natchez High was on the losing end of an 18-14 scrimmage against Wilkinson County High last month, but Bulldog head football coach Elbert &uot;Mo&uot; Lyles saw plenty of good things over the spring.
&uot;It went pretty good,&uot; Lyles said. &uot;We got to look at a lot of things and did a good bit of evaluation. We played a lot of guys in the spring game.&uot;
Lyles has been concentrating on his offensive line and the defense since spring practices began last week.
The offensive line was a weak point for the Bulldogs last year, while the defense lost several standouts.
&uot;To tell you the truth I saw a tremendous amount of improvement during the spring,&uot; he said. &uot;Our offense seems to be jelling. Overall, I thought the spring was a plus.&uot;
Lyles was also without several players who competed in track.
&uot;But we wanted to get a look at a lot of our backup people,&uot; he said. &uot;We wanted a good look at our backup quarterback (Tyrone Good) and I thought he did a good job for the first time out there.&uot;
Lyles started his workout schedule last week and the Bulldogs will begin two-a-days the first week of August.
&uot;Once we get our skilled people in with our linemen and do some polishing up on some minor mistakes we made, we’ll be headed in the right direction,&uot; he said. &uot;We need to get the mental aspect down the way we want it.&uot;
Lyles said the coaching staff is almost set on its starting group.
&uot;We’re going to be looking at our depth and be rotating people,&uot; he said.
&uot;We’re looking at having basically everything set going into the fall. We’ll have some minor adjustments, but other than that we’re ready to go.&uot;
