An immediate spot in the state championship was on the line, but Confederate All-Star Parker Brumfield wasn’t nervous as he faced the Rebel League All-Star batters from the pitcher’s mound Saturday.
&uot;My changeup worked really good for me,&uot; Brumfield said. &uot;I just threw it across it the plate. I was surprised I gave up only three hits.&uot;
Brumfield and the Confederate All-Star team beat the Rebels 10-0 in the Dixie Youth 9-10 All-Star City Championship series at Ballew-Bowlin Field, earning the chance to host the state tournament. The Confederate team won the series two games to none.
&uot;It feels great,&uot; Confederate All-Stars head coach William Barnes said about winning the title. &uot;These kids played good and they hit the ball real well.&uot;
The game was called after 3 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule. Brumfield struck out six and walked none in four innings for the win.
&uot;Parker pitched great,&uot; coach Barnes said. &uot;He threw strikes. We got some good defensive plays behind him.&uot;
Brumfield gave up a first-pitch single in the top of the first inning to Clint Easom that hit him in the throat.
After being down on the ground for a few minutes, Brumfield came back and retired the side.
The Confederate All-Stars then had a six-run, six-hit bottom of the first.
Luke Brumfield, Matt Barnes, Dustin Carroll and Brian Sanderson hit four singles in a row.
After Barnes’s RBI single and Duncan Guedon was hit by a pitch to score Barnes with the bases loaded, Ross Smith hit a two-run single. &uot;I had good hits,&uot; Smith said. &uot;I told myself I would not strike out at all because it’s been a long time since I struck out.&uot;
Smith went 1-for-1 and had 3 RBIs. Barnes and Carroll each went 2-for-2.
Jamez Logan added and RBI single and Jesse Morrison drew a bases-loaded walk to score Smith.
Bradley Harveston had a chance to add to the lead, but lined to third baseman Lee Guedon to end the inning.
&uot;We set the tone in the first inning,&uot; Barnes said. &uot;They were loose and ready to play from the beginning.&uot;
The Rebel All-Stars got a lead-off single from Jon Jon Floyd in the top of the second, but he was tagged out at second on a fielder’s choice.
In the top of the third inning, third baseman Joseph McDonough made two strong catches, first when Wells Middleton tried to bunt his way to first and then when Jeb White hit a high foul ball. The Confederate team scored four runs in the bottom of the third off reliever Lee Guedon.
The state tournament will be at Ballew-Bowlin and Carroll Jones fields beginning July 22.
The Rebel League will play in the sub-district tournament on June 30 at Pine Hills and will take on Claiborne County at 6 p.m.
