Von Hutchins will be leaving for Ole Miss Monday with more confidence and expectations than he had at this time last year as a true freshman.
&uot;It was a big adjustment to college football and college life in general,&uot;&160;Hutchins said. &uot;But I feel real comfortable now. I know what to expect.&uot;
Hutchins, an honor student, begins summer classes Tuesday.
&uot;I just like to stay ahead and get as much work in the classroom done before football starts,&uot; he said.
Hutchins, who was red-shirted by Ole Miss last year, was recruited as a wide receiver after a standout career as a quarterback and defensive back at Cathedral.
But the lack of defensive backs at Ole Miss led to Hutchins moving to the defensive side as a cornerback.
&uot;I’was playing free safety in the spring, but haven’t really talked to the coaches this summer,&uot; he said.
Hutchins was unable to play in the Ole Miss spring game because he hyperextended his knee.
&uot;I&160;was having a pretty good spring until I hurt my knee,&uot; he said. &uot;I was getting the defensive calls down But when I hyperextended my knee it kind of pushed me back. It was real tough not playing in the spring game. I haven’t been on the field for a game in a year-and-a-half. I wanted the opportunity to show everybody what I have.&uot;
Which is another reason he is eager for summer practice to begin.
&uot;I have been picking up on some of the defensive schemes and getting stronger in the weight room,&uot; said Hutchins, who is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, up 10 pounds from last year. &uot;I’m just looking for an opportunity to show what I can do.&uot;
