Brian Hughes stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

He kicked at the dirt in the batter’s box and then laced an RBI-single for the game-winning hit.

Hughes’ single brought coach Naomi Hayes and the Godley’s Clinic team their first championship in the T.M. Jennings 11-12-year-old league championship game Wednesday night at Joe Frazier field in Natchez.

Godley’s beat Air Corps 7-6 for the title.

The sixth inning was pivotal for Godley’s Clinic.

With the game tied at six, Cedric Kinds worked himself out a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth by getting the last two outs on strikeouts. Kinds pitched a complete game.

Hayes said her team has gotten close to the championship in the past but this is the first time they have won it. &uot;I am real proud of them,&uot; she said.

&uot;I just told them to go out to play and have fun.&uot;

In the T.M. Jennings 9-10-year-old championship game, Pyron’s beat Byrne’s Insurance 11-5.

The game was tied at two in the second before Byrne’s Insurance tacked on three runs in the third inning.

Pyron’s coach Charles Bass went to his bull pen and put Travis Isaac on the mound in the third inning.

Isaac responded, shutting down the Byrne’s team for the rest of the game.

&uot;He really came in a closed them down,&uot; Bass said. &uot;He pitched real well.&uot;

Pyron’s got some offense when Garret Johnson stepped to the plate and delivered a triple with the bases loaded. Johnson tried to stretch the hit into an inside-the-park homer but he was called out at the plate.

Then back-to-back doubles from Bobby Ford and Jordan Bass capped Pyron’s scoring.

Pyron’s was 14-2 on the season, and Bass said he is pleased with the way the team played.

&uot;We had a good season and a good group of kids,&uot; he said. &uot;Before the game I told the kids to have fun.&uot;
