Natchez boys cruise in first round of Dixie Boys All-Star Tournament

Glenn Williams had five hits in five at-bats including two home runs as Natchez defeated Franklin County 14-1 here Saturday in the first round of the Dixie Boys 14s Baseball Tournament.

Claiborne County defeated Brookhaven in the first game 21-20.

Natchez gets a bye Monday and will play again Tuesday.

Natchez got started early in the game versus Franklin County. A total of eight Natchez batters came to the plate in the top of the first inning.

Williams and Garrett Jones led off the game with consecutive singles.

After a Sam Thomas walk, Michael Blain was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the game’s first run.

A bases-loaded walk and an RBI fielder’s choice by Mitchell Nerren made the score at the end of the top of the first inning 3-0.

On the mound for Natchez, Luke Ogden struck out four Franklin County hitters in the bottom of the first. The fourth strikeout came by way of a dropped third strike.

Ogden would later homer in the fourth inning.

Natchez added one run in the second inning as Williams ripped a one-out double to left field and scored on a passed ball.

Ogden again shut down the competition in the bottom of the second, striking out two and allowing no hits.

Natchez added two more runs in the top of the third as Ogden walked and came around to score on a passed ball and Williams had an RBI single.

In the first game of the night, Claiborne County used a 12-run fifth inning and a four-run seventh en route to a come-from-behind 21-20 victory.

The game lasted nearly three hours.

Claiborne County defeated the visiting Brookhaven due in part to a strong showing on the mound by Jekel Smith, who shut them out in the top of the seventh inning.

Claiborne County scored scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Claiborne County’s leading hitter, Austin Fagan, collected five hits in six at-bats to lead the offensive attack.
