Spring-Davis lead Wharlest Jackson tourey

Despite the temperature reaching near 100 degrees in the afternoon, 13 teams had rounds in the 60s Saturday in the second annual Wharlest Jackson Elks Lodge Golf Tournament.

The two-man scrambleis being played at Duncan Park Golf Course.

Jamie Spring and Larry Davis hold a two-shot lead over three teams in the championship flight after shooting a 10-under-par 61.

Davis and Spring had six birdies for a front nine score of 29 and four birdies for a 32 on the back nine.

&uot;It was nothing special really,&uot; Davis said. &uot;We drove two greens. Jamie putted good. We made three putts over 10 feet. The course is in good shape. It rolls really good. (Duncan Park golf pro) Marvin (Gray) is doing good with the course.&uot;

The three teams that are two strokes back at 63 are Wesley Rogers and Guy Hollingsworth (30-33); Phillip West and Esaw West (33-30); and Jordan and Dennis Anderson (31-32).

Rogers and Hollingsworth had five birdies on the front nine and three more on the back nine.

Phillip West and Esaw West had an eagle on the par-4 No. 4 hole, birdies on the No. 5 and No. 8 holes and bogeys on No. 6 and No. 9 holes on the front nine and an eagle on the par-5 No. 10, birdies on five other holes and a bogey on No. 13 hole on the back nine.

Phillip West and Esaw West were one of only two teams that had a better score on the back nine than on the front nine.

The Andersons had an eagle on the par-4 1st hole, birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 8 holes and a bogey on No. 4 on the front nine and birdies on the No. 10, 11, 12 and No. 16 on the back nine.

Pete and Judy Powell are three strokes back with a 64 (32-32) after having eight birdies and one bogey.

The teams of John Davis and Prem Vidhana (31-34) and Leonard Frazier and Arthur Johnson (30-35) are four strokes back with a 65.

Three teams lead the First Flight after shooting a 66: David Cothren and Keith Rayborn (33-33); Jack Britton and H. Chambers (30-36); and Chuck Fields and Ross Hufford (33-33).

Henry Farmer and Paul Guido shot a 67 (32-35). Pete Buttross and Neal Partridge (34-35) and Addis and Akeem West (33-36) each fired a 69.

Three teams shot a 70: Mike Kern and Jimmy Hibbs (33-37); Phil and Dunny McKinney (34-36); and Mark Mason and Kelly Huffman (36-34).

The team of Mason and Huffman was the other team to score better in the back nine than on the front nine.

Three teams lead the Second Flight with scores of 71: Tex Mahon and Bob Heye (34-37); Cookie Wilson and Don Waldon (35-36) and Phil Hannon and Jarrett Myers (35-36).

Wilson and Waldon had perhaps the most unusual round on Saturday: three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the front nine and two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine.

Hannon, of Jackson, Miss., and Myers are playing in their first tournament in Natchez.

&uot;This is the first time down here and to play on this course,&uot; Hannon said. &uot;The greens are well-maintained and roll real good.

&uot;The golf course is in great shape. They (the Elks Lodge) have got a good tournament. They’ve got it well-organized.&uot;

Three teams — Bucky Merritt and Jeff Burkhalter; Willie Williams and Rock Promise; and John Parker and E.C. Everett — shot a 72.

Leroy Hunt and M. Jackson shot a 73. Roger Tolbert and J.B. Watts fired a 77. George West, Jr. and George West III shot an 84.

The final round of the tournament will start today at 8:30 a.m.
