Teens shatter stereotypes through summer work

Good things come in small packages. We heard that saying once a long time ago, and we were reminded of it this week by small groups in Natchez doing lots of good things.

About 200 teenagers with World Changers, a Christian group of volunteers, are spreading good deeds and their good message all through our town.

For the past several years, the teens swoop into town from parts as diverse as Owasso, Okla., and Corinth and through their work repairing homes for low-income residents, they break every stereotype of modern-day teens imaginable.

In a world in which our youth are often portrayed as ill-willed with anger and violence in their hearts, these teens demand attention through their amazingly generous work.

While their peers are out riding around enjoying selfish bliss during the last few weeks of summer, World Changers are sweating through the sweltering heat doing work for strangers.

It’s almost amazing when you first hear about what the group does.

The volunteers come into our community and proceed to do home repairs for low-income families.

From leaky roofs to peeling paint, nothing is too big – or nasty – of a job for the World Changers crews.

Don’t believe that miracles still happen every day? Just ask one of the folks receiving some of the World Changers’ kindness this week.

As the teens swarmed atop her leaky roof Mary Belle Carey couldn’t believe it was happening.

&uot; It’s just too good to be true,&uot; she said from her wheelchair.

And she was right. The World Changers’ work is too good to be true … but it is.

Just ask Mary Belle Carey about her new roof.
