Cathedral girls win season opener

The Cathedral High School Green Wave won its first game of the season Thursday against Franklin County High School by a score of 25-6 in local slow-pitch softball action.

The game ended after the fourth inning with the invocation of the 10-run rule.

Green Wave head coach Lynn Ogden said she was pleased with her team’s performance.

&uot;For the first time out it’s not bad,&uot; she said.

Franklin County grabbed the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but it would be Franklin’s only lead of the night.

The Green Wave scored five runs in the bottom of the first, quickly taking the lead. Cathedral got a pair home runs in the inning from Krystal Groom and Jessica Barrett.

Franklin scored one run in the top of the second to make it 5-3.

Cathedral answered, adding five more runs in the bottom of the second. Cathedral got two more home runs, this time from Mary Margaret Allwood and another from Groom.

Franklin added two more runs in the top of the third inning to make the score 10-5.

Cathedral added five more runs in the bottom of the third. There was only one home run in the third inning, but it was Barrett’s second of the game.

Cathedral’s biggest inning came in the fourth, which would be the last inning Green Wave needed.

Ten runs crossed the plate in the inning which saw 15 Cathedral batters come to the plate.

Barrett added a third home run to her total and Laura Huffins hit a three-run homer.

Barrett ended the day batting 4-4 with three home runs, 5 RBI and a single.

Cathedral’s only senior, Groom, went 3-4 with two home runs, 6 RBI and a single. Emily Stevens was perfect on the day, going 4-4 with a double, two singles and an infield hit.

Cathedral pitcher Amber Green got the win. Green allowed two earned runs on seven hits and left seven men on base. The Green Wave committed three errors.

Ogden said the first game gave her a picture of what the team is doing well and what it needs to work on.

&uot;We ran the bases well,&uot; she said. &uot;The infield played decent.&uot;

Ogden said this year’s Green Wave team is young and has some work to do.

&uot;We lost seven seniors last year,&uot; she said. &uot;We have a completely new outfield.&uot;

Cathedral’s next game is against Natchez High School on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. at the Natchez softball complex.
