Madison woman researching state’s old cemeteries
Published 12:00 am Monday, August 21, 2000
Pat Wellington of Madison, Mississippi, has undertaken the monumental project of getting all the old cemeteries of Mississippi listed in a data bank.
At present Pat has collected some 2000 cemeteries which are listed alphabetically and accompanied by a list of family names and the cemeteries in which they are buried.
A series of 17 volumes was printed and given to the Department of Archives last month.
Now Pat hopes to get some cemeteries on a data base that can be incorporated with these listings. The finished product will be made available to libraries on CD at cost which will probably be in the range of $5.00 each.
If there is anyone who has a source available Pat would appreciate being contacted at 227 Coachman’s Road, Madison, Miss., 39110.
DOES ANYONE KNOW…..
4Joyce Nicholson (201 East Walnut Street, Union, Miss., 39365, email-bonick@mississippi.net) needs help with a stumbling block in locating the parents of DANIEL NICHOLSON who married Mary Ann HANKINS in Jasper County, Mississippi. Daniel, at age 10, was found in the 1850 census along with a Martha Carstarphan, age 30, and Rebecca Nellie, age 16, in the home of William and Mary McCLENDON who turned out to be Daniel’s grandparents.
Daniel Nicholson, Rebecca WILLIAMS, Martha HICKMAN, and Thomas STERLING are listed in William McClendon’s will of 1858. Daniel Nicholson and Thomas Sterling are referred to as grandsons and Rebecca Williams and Martha Hickman are referred to as daughters. Does anyone know who the parents of Daniel Nicholson were? Any help with this mystery will be appreciated!
4Juanita Waters (2422 Via Camino Avenue Carmichael, Calif., 95608, email-jwaters@cwo.com) is seeking the descendants of one NANCY SKINNER who married WILLIAM L. WATERS in Rankin County, Mississippi on 25 August 1873.
Waters has more than 300 Waters in her family tree and if you are related, would love to hear from you. Her Waters started in Ireland and migrated through South Carolina to Georgia (?), Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas and California.
4Jesse A. Osborn (164 Joanie Street, Pearl, Miss., 39200, email- Jesseo49@aol.com) is looking for the descendants of four SCOTT brothers from the Jefferson and Claiborne County areas of Mississippi. Their names were William, Samuel, Thomas and Osborn. William married Sarah TERRY on 21 November 1822. Samuel married Anna FAKE on 14 April 1826. Thomas married Matilda TERRY on 2 January 1834 and Osborn married Emily NEWMAN on 9 February 1837. The names of the children of Samuel, Thomas, and Osborn are known, but there has been very little luck locating the next generation. It was recently discovered that the four brothers were the sons of HULDA OSBORN, the sister of Jesse’s direct ancestor Ichabod Osborn and the daughter of Samuel Osborn who settled in what is now Jefferson County, Mississippi in 1769. Can any reader help locate these descendants?
4Wendy Fulcher Cutts Bashinski (wbashinski@twcf.rr.com) is working on the connections between her CUTTS, FULCHER, MING, and BOUCHILLON lines. She is hoping to find some of her father’s cousins. Her father, ROLAND CUTTS, grew up in Louisville, Mississippi. He was the son of Jake Cutts and Belle FULCHER and had four sisters (Elsie, Molly, Virginia, and Janie) and one brother (Walter). Bashinski has special memories of visiting Murphy Creek Baptist Church with her father and on her last trip to the area (some 22 years ago) recalls meeting several Fulcher relatives. Are their any Bouchillon or Cutts relatives still in the area? There is special interest in finding the children of her great-uncle, NOAH CARROLL. Can anyone help locate these relatives? Mrs. Bashinski and her father would love to hear from you!
