The Wesson High Lady Cobras rallied from a six-run deficit to defeat the Cathedral Lady Green Wave 12-7 in a key District 7-2A contest Tuesday at the Natchez Girls Softball Complex.
&uot;We just decided to play at the end,&uot; said Wesson head coach Lane Young. &uot;We played good defense. We gave them some runs early.&uot;
Cathedral (6-1, 2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead when two Wesson errors allowed lead-off hitter Kate Reid to score and Leighton McDaniel scored on another error.
Wesson cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third when Maggie Morgan tripled and scored on an RBI&160;groundout by King.
Cathedral then appeared as if it put the game out of reach when it scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the third.
McDaniel, Krystal Groom and Tori Blackwell each had RBI singles and two runners scored on an error for a 7-1 lead.
&uot;We should’ve put the pressure on them when we had that lead, and we didn’t,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Lynn Ogden.
Wesson (6-8, 3-1) cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Maggie Johnson with the bases loaded, a fielder’s choice by Anna Johnson with the bases still loaded and an RBI sacrifice fly by Kail Baldwin. King then got in the zone and allowed only three hits in the last four innings of the game.
&uot;I just settled down and pitched the ball in there,&uot; King said. &uot;We tried our best to come back and we did.&uot;
King gave up seven runs and 12 hits, struck out four and walked four for the win.
&uot;They’ve got to start hitting the ball well,&uot; coach Ogden said. &uot;Wesson’s a tough team. You’ve got to win in and you’ve got to earn it and tonight we didn’t.&uot;
The Lady Cobras tied the score at seven in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Valorie Brooks and an RBI sacrifice fly by Brittany Smith.
&uot;We finally decided to hit the ball late in the game,&uot; coach Young said. &uot;We’ve had a lot of close games this season.&uot;
Wesson took the lead for good in the top of the sixth as Baldwin scored on a single by Channelle McCroy.
The Lady Cobras then added four runs in the top of the seventh as Millie Smith scored on an error, Brittany Smith had an RBI double and Maggie Johnson had an RBI single.
&uot;No one likes to lose, but it might be the best thing to happen,&uot; coach Ogden said.
