The Loyd Star Lady Hornets pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of seven Cathedral errors to defeat the Lady Green Wave 12-8 in a District 7-2A contest Thursday at the Natchez Girls Softball Complex.

The loss dropped Cathedral to 6-2 overall and into a tie with Loyd Star (4-7 overall) at 2-2 in district play. It was the second straight game the Lady Green Wave lost to a team with a losing record.

Instead of waiting until the middle of the game to get its bats going, like Wesson did against Cathedral in a come-from-behind 12-7 win Tuesday, Loyd Star jumped on Cathedral pitcher Amber Green early and often.

Beth Smith hit a lead-off single to start the game and scored on a triple by Dana Coke. Coke scored on an RBI groundout by Leah Smith for a 2-0 lead before Cathedral went to bat.

Loyd Star eventually built at 7-0 lead before Cathedral attempted a rally.

Cathedral cut the deficit to 7-2 in the bottom of the third. Krystal Groom had an RBI single and Barrett had an RBI double.

The Lady Green Wave cut into Loyd Star’s lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Kate Reid and Mary Margaret Allwood to trail 7-4.

Loyd Star got the lead back up to four runs in the top of the fifth as Ashton Williams scored on an error.

Cathedral then closed the gap to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth as Groom singled and scored on a three-base error and Katie Hinton had an RBI single.

That would, however, be as close as Cathedral would get as Loyd Star scored four runs in the top of the sixth on two errors and a two-run single by Leah Smith.

Cathedral scored twice in the bottom of the sixth for the final scores of the game.

Jordan Britt was the winning pitcher for Loyd Star, giving up eight runs and 12 hits while striking out one and walking seven.

Green took the loss for Cathedral, giving up 12 runs and 14 hits while striking out three and walking five.

Cathedral plays at Richland in a district game at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 26.
