Powell leading pack after first day of golf tournament

Pete Powell had the low round of the day Saturday at the Natchez Ladies, Senior Ladies, Super Senior Ladies, Senior Men, Super Senior Men and Legend Men Golf Tournament at Duncan Park Golf Course.

Powell shot a bogey-free, six-under-par round of 65 to take a 16-shot lead in the Senior Men (50+) division.

&uot;I started out a little slow,&uot; Powell said. &uot;I made a few putts and left a few on the lip of the hole.&uot;

Powell said his round got going on the fourth hole, which he described as &uot;the hardest hole out here.&uot; Powell had four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. He missed the green on holes nine and 17, but was able to par both holes.

C.L. Smith shot an 89 in the Super Senior Men’s (65-74) division. Peter Buttross had a round of 93 to take a six-shot lead over C.F. Carlton, who had a 99, in the Legend Men’s (75+) division.

&uot;I played terrible on the front nine and played better on the back nine,&uot; Buttross said. &uot;I had a 43 on the back nine, which is what I usually shoot on the back nine.&uot;

Sally Durkin fired a two-over-par 73 to take an eight-shot lead in the Ladies Open division.

&uot;I just didn’t make any mistakes,&uot; Durkin said. &uot;I missed some birdie putts, but I made par where I needed to make par. I hit my drive much better on the back nine than I did on the front nine.&uot;

Peggy McCall shot an 86 in the Senior Ladies (50+) division. &uot;I felt like I shot a good round,&uot; McCall said. &uot;I missed a few putts. I chipped pretty good today.&uot;

Patsy Jones had a round of 91 to take a one-shot lead over Sonia Cothren, who had a 92, in the Super Senior Ladies (65+) division.

&uot;I’m thrilled to death with my 91,&uot; Jones said. &uot;I’ll take it any day.&uot;
