Clowns, rare horses, a baby elephant, acrobats and plenty of family entertainment — where can you find all these things in Natchez? At the Carson & Barnes Circus, which rolls into town next week.
The five-ring extravaganza will perform in Natchez at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, next to the baseball fields at Liberty Park.
&uot;It’s going to be fun — so much fun,&uot; said Steve Pearson, promotion chairman of Trace City Kiwanis, which is sponsoring the event. &uot;Good, clean, family entertainment — that’s what we’re promoting.&uot;
Carson & Barnes Circus is the largest traditional big top circus touring American today, and it will perform in Natchez in a tent longer than a football field.
Trace City Kiwanis will receive 25 percent of the money from advance ticket sales and 10 percent of the ticket sales sold at the gate.
Kiwanis expects to raise between $5,000 and $10,00 from the fundraiser. The club will donate the money to area charities, Pearson said. This is the first time the club has sponsored such a large project, but members decided to help because of the money it could generate, he said.
The circus will present a Spanish theme, &uot;Viva Espana&uot; and include performances by Jennie, a 2-year-old elephant, and the Liberty Horse Act, a breed of rare Friesian stallions, which nearly became extinct during the 20th century.
It will also include 100 animals — such as lions, tigers, hippos, a zebra, a wallabies and clowns, jugglers, high wire acrobats and trapeze artists.
Carson & Barnes Circus has been traveling the United States for more than 63 years and is owned and operated by the same family.
The circus and its 80 transport vehicles will begin arriving in Natchez around dawn Oct. 27 to prepare for that night’s show. A group of elephants will hoist the circus tent.
The public is invited, free of charge, to watch the set-up, take elephant rides and visit a petting zoo.
Some locations to purchase advance circus tickets are Christie’s Cevron, on U.S. 61 North; Natchez Mall; Fox 48-WNTZ on Col. John Pitchford Parkway, and Redd Pest Control on U.S. 61 North. Other ticket locations will be announced later.
