A lot of hot air means a great time in Natchez

If you can’t find a way to have a good time in Natchez this weekend, then you just aren’t trying very hard. Today marks the kick off of the 15th annual Great Mississippi River Balloon Race on the grounds of Rosalie in Natchez. The event is easily the biggest single weekend event Natchez has. Thousands will come to see the balloons float overhead, taste the food and hear the music on tap at the festival that just keeps getting better.
From humble beginnings with only two balloonists willing to brave strong winds at the first event, the festival has grown to bring in dozens of balloons from all across the country.
It’s so popular people mark their calendars and book accommodations in Natchez years in advance.
For first-time balloon festival goers, the vision of balloons slowly floating from beneath the morning mist and across the expansive Mississippi River basin is almost surreal. When the weather is good, dozens of balloons will dot the skies like a flock of birds.
As if the spectacular sights overhead weren’t enough to satisfy the eyes, as usual the balloon race promises top-notch entertainment to nourish the ears as well. Musical headliners include the legendary Eddie Money and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere & the Raiders fame.
The fun begins today with the Balloon Glow at 7 p.m. with a special fireworks show over the river.
This year’s event promises to be the best one yet, and it’s all thanks to the people behind the scenes whose hard work makes things flow smoothly.
