Wave suffers ‘tough loss’ to Wesson

The Wesson High Cobras did not care that they were playing against Cathedral in the Green Wave’s homecoming game Friday night at D’Evereaux Stadium.

All they cared about was winning a football game, which they did – 27-16 in a District 7-2A match.

&uot;It was a tough loss,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley. &uot;I didn’t think we played with as much intensity as we should have. We didn’t play as well as we’re capable of.&uot;

Instead of using a wishbone offense as expected, Wesson came out in a wing-T formation.

&uot;They caught us by surprise in the first half,&uot; Beesley said.

Wesson racked up 329 yards on the ground, led by Nick Gunter’s 97 yards on 13 carries and Marcus Corley’s 80 yards on 10 carries.

&uot;Corley, Russell Robinson and Billy Ray Miller did an good job running the ball tonight,&uot; said Wesson head coach Ronald Greer.

Wesson (4-5, 1-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard run by Gunter, who added the extra point.

Cathedral (0-7, 0-4) cut the lead to 7-3 on a 27-yard field goal by Byron Zerby early in the second quarter.

Wesson quarterback Jason Shannon then threw a 10-yard TD pass to Kent Hoaglin. The extra point was good and the Cobras had a 14-3 second-quarter lead.

Cathedral answered that score with an 11-yard TD pass from Bart Lane to Mark Steckler. The try for two failed and the Green Wave trailed 14-9 at the half.

The Cobras took a 20-9 lead in the third quarter on Emanuel Sinclair’s 5-yard run with 4:01 remaining.

Then came an eventful fourth quarter.

With 4:33 left, Jim Sandel blocked Gunter’s 20-yard field goal attempt. Conor Gibson picked up the ball and was on his way to the end zone when an official inadvertently blew his whistle.

Cathedral got the ball at its own eight instead of six points.

Then with 3:12 to play, Turner Smith threw a 10-yard pass to Clay Hammons, who then lateraled the ball to Ben Eidt. Eidt ran 20 yards for a touchdown to cut Wesson’s lead to 20-16.

Wesson, however, put the game out of reach with 1:06 left on a one-yard run by Miller.

Wesson’s defense held Cathedral to 161 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers while the special teams blocked two punts.

&uot;The two blocked punts killed us,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;Our offensive line has to do a better job of blocking. We hung in there, but we ran out of gas.&uot;
