Cathedral High’s 1999-2000 varsity girls’ basketball team went through a transition season – only it happened during midway through the season.

During theChristmas break last December, head coach Bill Cameron unexpectedly died. Craig Beesley volunteered to coach the team the rest of the season.

The result was an 10-13 overall record and a 2-6 record in District 6-2A.

Beesley returns for his first full season coaching the Lady Green Wave in 2000-2001 and expects his team to do better this season, he said.

That could prove a difficult task as only two starters return from last year’s squad: senior point guard Vee Brice, who averaged six points per game, and junior center Kate Prescott, who averaged 11 points and 10 rebounds a game.

Beesley said six players are battling for the other three starting positions: sophomores Kelsey Stephens and Rebecca Cooley, junior Mary-Margaret Alwood and seniors Krystal Groom, Jennifer Blain and Jessica Barrett.

&uot;I feel like we’ll be a little faster this season,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We’ll be better defensively as a team. We might struggle a little offensively at the beginning, but it’ll get better after a couple of games.&uot;

Beesley said the teams to beat this season in District 6-2A will be Hinds AHS and Loyd Star.

Cathedral’s season begins on Tuesday, at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at Monterey. The first home game will be on Friday, at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 against Central.
