Sophomore running back Ja’Mel Jackson ran for five touchdowns and quarterback Bart Lane threw for two more as the Cathedral Green Wave routed Hinds Agricultural High 46-6 in a District 7-2A game Friday night at D’Evereaux Field.

&uot;The monkey’s finally off our back,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley Sr. The win was the team’s first of the season.

&uot;It feels great to get that first win,&uot; he said. &uot;The team played good together tonight. I’m proud for my seniors and the way they played tonight.&uot;

Cathedral moved to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in district. Hinds AHS dropped to 1-8 and 0-4.

Jackson was the spark plug for the Green Wave offense, rushing 16 times for 266 yards, 177 in the first half alone.

&uot;Ja’Mel did a good job running the ball tonight,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;The offensive line did a good job coming off the ball.&uot;

Not to be outdone, Cathedral’s defense had its best performance of the season.

Hinds AHS quarterback Julius Davis’ first pass of the game was intercepted by Patrick Biglane and returned to the Hinds 49 and a facemask penalty gave Cathedral the ball at the 44.

Six plays later, Jackson scored his first touchdown on a 30-yard run.

&uot;The interception and scoring drive set the tone for the game,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;It also took the wind out of their sails.&uot;

&uot;The defense did a good job in the first half,&uot; he continued. &uot;Craig Beesley, our defensive coordinator, had a good game plan and they did a good job of running it.&uot;

Jackson scored again on a 13-yard run late in the first quarter to give the Green Wave a 14-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the War Dawgs, Jackson wasn’t done running over, through and around their defense.

He scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 51 yards and 21 yards as Cathedral took a 27-0 halftime lead.

Lane threw his first touchdown pass of the game, a 42-yarder, to Mark Steckler for a 34-0 lead.

Hinds went to a no-huddle, hurry-up offense which produced its only points of the game, a 10-yard pass from Davis to Kentral Kelly.

Lane then threw a 37-yard TD pass to Key Smith late in the third quarter and Jackson scored his final TD of the game on a 69-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Lane completed four of 11 passes for 99 yards with two interceptions.

&uot;Cathedral played well tonight,&uot; said Hinds AHS head coach Jeffery Gibson. &uot;I’m happy for Coach Beesley. Numbers make a difference.&uot;
