FERRIDAY, La. – An alleged stolen milk carton and a chance to leave jail may have led to separate charges of battery at the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility. Two inmates were charged with battery of correctional officers in connection with the separate incidents.
Alberto Justiz Hernan, 58, of 26356 Louisiana 15 in Ferriday, was charged with aggravated battery of a correctional officer for allegedly biting officer Billy Hammers Jr. on the arm Thursday morning. Hernan reportedly attempted to steal a carton of milk from another inmate during breakfast at the facility, which caused a fight between the two men, said Warden Russell Butler.
After officers broke up the fight and escorted Hernan to maximum security, they uncuffed one of his hands — and Hernan bit Hammers on the arm.
In a Tuesday morning incident, Barbaro Paez, 30, of 4545 Aerlgios St. in Baton Rouge, struck two other inmates, cutting one above the eye, and hit corrections officer James Smith, who was not injured. The incident happened when officers arrived at Paez’s dorm and Paez &uot;apparently balked at having to leave the facility,&uot; according to Butler. Paez was charged with two counts of battery of a correctional officer.
Both Paez and Hernan were booked at the Concordia Parish Jail Tuesday morning and returned within the hour to the correctional facility, where they were placed in maximum security.
