Natchez produced a clean sweep of West Feliciana Tuesday, as the junior varsity and both varsity teams notched wins against the St. Francisville, La., teams.

The varsity Lady Bulldogs did not lead the Lady Saints until only three minutes were left in the third quarter, but that lead lasted until the end as Natchez won 50-40.

West Feliciana (3-4) took a 16-7 lead in the first quarter thanks to Sherneta Graham’s six steals and eight points in the period. The Lady Bulldogs (6-4) trailed 26-20 at the half.

&uot;We played a little slow at first,&uot; said Natchez coach Mary Irving. &uot;We weren’t aggressive as we should have been. Turnovers were about to hurt us until we realized we’d better play some defense.&uot;

Angel Taylor and Crystal Brown did just that, combining for 26 rebounds in the game and helping Natchez take a 33-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

&uot;I just tried to get out there and play my hardest,&uot; said Brown, who finished with a team-high 15 points. &uot;I stayed focused and never gave up.&uot;

In the boys’ game, the varsity Saints picked the wrong town in which to look for their first win.

Natchez scored 36 points in the first quarter and never looked back, easily defeating winless West Feliciana 97-53.

When the Saints (0-4) showed any sign of life, the Bulldogs (7-1) answered.

A Darren Coates steal led to a fast-break Saints’ basket by Damien Baker. The Bulldogs responded with a momentum-crushing alley-oop to Vasshun Newborne, who finished the game with 27 points.

West Feliciana’s Tim Washington ended the second quarter with a three-pointer. The Bulldogs’ Jamal Bouldin answered with three consecutive three-pointers to start the second half. Bouldin finished the game with six three-pointers and a game-high 29 points.

Je’Kel Foster scored 15 in the first half before he and the majority of the varsity starters let the younger players finish the game.

Most of those young players were warmed-up from the earlier junior-varsity game, in which the Bulldogs defeated the Saints 41-30.

Derek Jarvis led the Saints in scoring with 14 points. He added another 3 in the varsity game.

Natchez’s district schedule starts Friday at home against Jim Hill. The girls varsity game starts at 6 p.m., with boys varsity immediately following.
