Jefferson County teams trounce Trojans

Jefferson County’s varsity basketball teams came away big wins over Ferriday in the Natchez High Hoops Classic Thursday at the Natchez High Gym.

In the varsity boys game, Delvin Thompson had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 51-39 win over the Trojans.

It was the first loss of the season for Ferriday after winning its first seven games.

Jason Clark had seven points for the Tigers and Jason Wyatt had 11 rebounds to go with his six points and three blocks.

Neither team shot particularly well from the free-throw line in the ball game.

Jefferson County was 4-for-10 and Ferriday was 7-for-12.

Jason Scott led Ferriday with 18 points, six rebounds, two steals and six blocks, and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Lakendrick Nix came off the bench to score 11 points and hit two three-pointers.

In the varsity girls game, the Lady Tigers held on to beat the Lady Trojans 51-49.

Sophomore Travalyn Smith scored 31 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Jefferson County (7-5).

&uot;Travalyn’s going to get better and better,&uot; said Lady Tigers head coach Flora McKnights. &uot;She’s a great player and a great listener.&uot;

Smith scored all but two of the team’s 16 first-quarter points as the Lady Tigers took a 10-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Trailing 29-21 at halftime, Ferriday (5-3) got back in the ball game by outscoring Jefferson County 14-7 in the third quarter to trail by only one point, 36-35, going into the fourth quarter.

&uot;The third quarter we didn’t take care of the basketball,&uot; McKnight said. &uot;Ferriday played hard.

&uot;We rebounded the ball well and played defense, even though we didn’t do good on free throws,&uot; she said.

The Lady Tigers were only 7-for-17 from the line.

Monique Jones did her best to give Ferriday a chance to win the game with two of her three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, but it was not meant to be.

Jones finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
