Hornets sting Cathedral

The Loyd Star Hornets found the Cathedral Green Wave at low tide Tuesday, defeating the home team 64-40 in the Cathedral High Gym for a District 6-2A win.
&uot;I’ve still got a bunch of young kids,&uot; said Cathedral coach Ken Beesley Jr. &uot;I started two freshman and a sophomore with two juniors tonight. I just hope we can improve as the year goes on.&uot;
The Hornets (6-6, 4-2) wasted no time getting started, as Seth Britt hit two quick three-pointers to help Loyd Star take a 8-0 lead. The Hornets led 17-6 heading into the second quarter.
Offensive penalties and missed shots let Cathedral (1-9, 0-5) back in the game, however, and the Green Wave only trailed 23-14 at the half.
Three early steals lead to a 9-0 Hornet run in the third quarter, though, and a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter effectively ended the contest.
&uot;We’ve got to shoot the ball better,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We missed a lot of open shots.&uot;
Loyd Star had something to do with the Wave’s low shooting percentage, as the team blocked eight Cathedral shots. Another factor was the Hornets’ defense, which hounded the Wave and recorded 23 steals to Cathedral’s six.
Demarcus Barnes was the chief thief, earning nine steals to go with his 15 points. Britt scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Hornets.
Johnathon Jackson led Cathedral with 11 points. Willie Clark contributed with 11 rebounds and two points.
&uot;We played hard, but not well enough to win,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We don’t have the athletes to run up and down the court with these guys. We need to make our shots and play smart.&uot;
Cathedral hosts St. Andrews in a another district contest Friday. The boys game will begin after the girls game at 6 p.m.
