The Loyd Star Lady Hornets used defense, rebounding and three-point shooting to defeat the Cathedral Lady Green Wave 78-44 in a District 6-2A game Tuesday night at the Cathedral High Gym.

Christie May had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Jennifer Scroggs added 19 points, six steals and a career-high four three-pointers for Loyd Star.

&uot;Christie averages about 14 rebounds a game and most of her points come off offensive rebounds,&uot; said Lady Hornets head coach Lori Britt. &uot;Jennifer is not even a regular starter, but maybe she should be.&uot;

The Lady Hornets (9-3, 6-0) took control of the game early by jumping out to a 20-7 first-quarter lead.

May and Scroggs each had eight points in the quarter.

Cathedral (5-4, 2-3) got back in the game in the second quarter by getting to the free-throw line and getting past Loyd Star’s press defense for some open baskets.

Jessica Barrett went 5-for-5 at the free-throw line in the first half as the Lady Green Wave trailed by only 11 points, 33-22, at halftime.

Barrett finished with 10 points and went 8-for-9 from the line and Vee Brice also had 10 points to lead Cathedral.

&uot;I was pleased with the way we broke the press,&uot; Lady Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said, &uot;but we couldn’t take advantage of the lay-ups.&uot;

After being outscored by Cathedral 15-13 in the second quarter, Loyd Star took charge of the game by scoring the first 14 points of the third quarter.

The Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Green Wave 26-9 in that quarter to put the game completely out of reach.

Loyd Star got 24 steals and forced nearly 20 Cathedral turnovers off its press defense and hit a total of eight three-pointers in the game.

&uot;I was disappointed in our intensity and our rebounding,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We’ve got a big game Friday, so we have to bounce back from this loss.&uot;
