Adams County will begin 2001 with a new president at the helm of the Adams County Board of Supervisors. The board voted 3-2 Tuesday to elect Sammy Cauthen as president for the year, replacing last year’s president Virginia Salmon.

&uot;Well, I certainly appreciate the nomination and the election,&uot; Cauthen said after the election.

Cauthen, Salmon and Lynwood Easterling voted in support of the new president while Thomas &uot;Boo&uot; Campbell and Darryl Grennell voted to name Grennell president.

Former president Salmon said she could have &uot;gone either way&uot; in her desire to serve as president as opposed to just serving as a board member.

But regardless of the vote, &uot;I’ll still be working for the county,&uot; Salmon said. &uot;(I’ll) still be an active supervisor.&uot;

Salmon has served for president for the past two years in addition to finishing out the term of former board president Maxie Wallace after he became ill. Salmon had been serving as vice president at the time. Wallace died in 1999.

Also on Tuesday, the board voted 3-2 to name Grennell vice president for 2001.

Grennell, who also served as vice president in 1999, said he was not disappointed about not being named president, adding that a similar situation had happened to him before.

&uot;I’m not really disappointed,&uot; said Grennell, adding he just wants to move forward for Adams County.

&uot;When it’s happened before you get used to it and you don’t let it get you down,&uot; Grennell said. &uot;It’s not gong to get me down. I’m just going to continue to work hard for the county.&uot;

Cauthen has served as a supervisor for 23 years, including several years as president and as last year’s vice president.

As president, Cauthen will be responsible for conducting the board meetings and signing off on board minutes and other paperwork as authorized by the board, as well as answering correspondence on behalf of the board.

Cauthen said one of the first things he will do as president is discuss with Salmon any items from last year the board still needs to deal with during 2001.

The idea is &uot;just keep the ball rolling – hopefully for the better,&uot; Cauthen said.

In other business Tuesday, the board:

4Reelected Marion Smith to serve as the board attorney.

4Discussed submitted a bid to the City of Natchez to purchase the Old Natchez Water Works building, on Market Street.

&uot;I would like to see us bid on that building,&uot; Easterling said. &uot;It doesn’t have to be high – just turn in a bid.&uot;

4Decided to discuss its communication tower regulations at its Jan. 16 meeting.

Currently, Adams County has a moratorium on tower construction until the supervisors could discuss regulations on the towers.
