FERRIDAY, La. – Both Ferriday teams moved to 2-0 in District 3-2A Friday with wins over Block High School. The Lady Trojans easily beat the Lady Bears 83-49 and the Trojans edged the Bears 61-56.
The Lady Trojans’ pressure defense and a consistent scoring offense was the difference in the girls varsity game.
Ferriday (12-9, 2-0) took an early 16-1 lead, but Block (11-7, 0-1) fought back and eventually tied the game at 24 in the second quarter. The Lady Trojans led 40-32 at halftime.
But that was as close as the score would be, as Ferriday opened the second half with a 12-0 run to set the tone for the rest of the game. The Lady Trojans outscored Block 20-5 in the final period.
&uot;Defense was the main factor,&uot; said Torisheka Taylor, who had a game-high eight steals. &uot;That and teamwork.&uot;

The Trojans had significantly more trouble getting past the Bears in the boys contest, despite a 17-0 run to start the game.
The Bears (11-8, 0-1) did not score until 1:24 remained in the first quarter, but Jeremy Washington’s three-pointer was the first of five first-half threes for Block. The Bears trailed by only six at the half.
Block’s Charles Branch sank a three to open the second half, and the Bears eventually took a 36-35 lead. Ferriday (17-7, 2-0) answered, though, and was able to hold onto a slight lead and the ball for the final minute of the game.
Jason Scott led Ferriday with 29 points, 21 boards and three blocks, all game highs. Derrick Williams added 13 points for Ferriday.
Ferriday next hosts Natchez on Tuesday, while the Bears will travel to district foe Vidalia.
