A bus accident Wednesday morning killed Natchez resident Eddie Gaines, who was in a pickup truck that collided with a Natchez-Adams school bus in a three-vehicle accident on Martin Luther King Jr. Road. Above, workers for the school district inspect the school bus before it was towed away following the accident, which left a second person in critical condition. According to Robert Smith, a Natchez-Adams bus driven by Ernest Wayne Strickland struck Smith’s pickup truck before swerving into the path of another pickup truck carrying Gaines and Roosevelt Logan. Gaines and Logan were transported to University Medical Center in Jackson, where Gaines died late Wednesday, according to Adams County Coroner James Lee. Logan was in critical condition Wednesday night. No children were on the bus at the time of the accident. The bus driver has been suspended with pay until the school district finishes an investigation, Superintendent Dr. Carl Davis said. Mississippi Highway Patrol officers worked the accident but could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Smith was not injured in the accident. Strickland was treated and released from Natchez Regional Medical Center.
