VIDALIA, La. – Things looked bleak for the home team when Vidalia’s first field goal came midway in the first half when an inadvertent Louis McNulty tip made a basket for Crowville.
Things looked decidedly better when the final seconds of overtime ticked off the clock for an 84-81 District 3-2A win.
&uot;All we had to do was play smart and get rebounds,&uot; said David Wilson, who scored four points in overtime, including two free throws to ice the win. &uot;We had to help the scorers under the goals.&uot;
Overtime was forced after Crowville’s Vernon McCarthy sank one of his six three-pointers to cut the Vikings’ lead to 71-70. Two possessions later, McNulty’s fifth foul sent McCarthy to the line, where he tied the game.
The Vikings scored the first five points of overtime, but the Bulldogs answered with a Billy McCarthy three. McCarthy scored six of his 11 points in the extra period.
Vidalia was forced to turn to its bench for help when Jarvis Vaughn fouled out early in the overtime period, as A.J. Warner had picked up his fifth foul in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Wilson responded by sinking two free throws and grabbing two important rebounds, one of which he promptly put back for the score.
Jessie Banks, who finished with nine points, also scored four in overtime.
Vaughn led Vidalia with 24 points, scoring 12 of them in a second quarter in which the Vikings took a 12-point lead.
The Bulldogs responded in the third quarter with a rain of three-pointers to tie the game at 54 all at the end of the period.
