Trinity Lady Saints one game away from South State title

MONROE, La. – The Trinity Lady Saints overcame a six-point
halftime deficit to defeat Mount Olive 72-61 in a semifinal game
Friday in the MPSA South A State Tournament at River Oaks School
in Monroe.
Vanessa Gordon had an outstanding performance for Trinity with
23 points, eight rebounds and eight steals, and she hit 10 of
13 free throws.
Sara Greer had 19 points and made nine of 10 free throws, Lauren
Tanner had 15 points and Becky Bass had 11 points. Ashley Kingsafer
had a team-high 14 rebounds.
&uot;My girls did a super job tonight,&uot; said Lady Saints
head coach Melanie Hall. &uot;I was very, very pleased with the
way they played.&uot;
Mount Olive, the second seed from District 6-1A, got off to
a good start and scored 21 points in the first quarter.
Mount Olive led Trinity, the number one seed from District
5-1A, 35-29 at halftime and still led by one point, 53-52, going
into the fourth quarter.
&uot;We played man-to-man in the second half and got their
two best players in foul trouble,&uot; Gordon said. &uot;I guess
we knew what we had to do.&uot;
Which was evident in the fourth quarter, which Trinity outscored
Mt. Olive 20-8.
&uot;We never lost our heads and we knew what had to do to
win,&uot; Greer said.
Trinity took 40 free throws in the game, and made 25 of them.
Trinity, 27-4, will play Riverdale in the championship game
at 2:30 p.m. today.
Riverdale, the top seed from District 6-1A, upset Porter’s
Chapel, the top seed from District 7-1A, 56-44 in an earlier game.
