Volunteers &uot;roving&uot; across the country found their way to Natchez this month. Seven couples with Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service (RVICS) have spent the last few weeks doing service projects at the Natchez Children’s Home.
&uot;There’s almost nothing that they can’t do,&uot; said Nancy Hungerford, executive director of the Natchez Children’s Home.
Over the past few days, the volunteers have done everything from build shelves, paint windows and plant flowers.
One volunteer, Barbara Kent of Wyoming even taught one resident of the children’s home how to sew.
&uot;I’ve gotten thousands and thousands of dollars worth of labor,&uot; said Hungerford.
The volunteers have completed work that otherwise would have continued to be put-off, Hungerford said.
In appreciation for their hard work, Vidalia Chapter No. 37 of the Eastern Star prepared a fish fry for the volunteers Saturday at the RV park in Vidalia.
RVICS is a nondenominational Christian organization made up of retired people who travel the country in their motor homes doing community service.
&uot;It’s a fun way to retire instead of just going somewhere and (sitting) in a RV park and (playing) shuffle board or whatever,&uot; said Lorin Dennis a group organizer for RVICS who is from South Dakota.
Dennis recommends RVICS to anyone looking for a way to spend their retirement combining Christian fellowship with service.
&uot;There’s no stress on the job for us,&uot; Dennis said. &uot;We enjoy what we’re doing. We’re all volunteers.&uot;
The RVICS members in Natchez come from all over the country and represent a variety of professions. These often blend together to help the volunteers accomplish the task at hand, Dennis said.
&uot;There’s no urgency to our jobs,&uot; Dennis said. &uot;We’re here to work, and we know how to do it.&uot;
The RVICS will be in Natchez until March 27. Anyone interested in obtaining information about RVICS can call 512-237-2446 or write RVICS National Headquarters, 1800 Southeast 4th St., Smithville, Texas.
