Grand Village to host annual Powwow

Native American song and dance, crafts and food will abound today and Sunday at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians’ 13th annual Natchez Powwow.
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is located at 400 Jefferson Davis Blvd., just off U.S. 61 South in Natchez.
Crafts and food booths will open at 10 a.m. today and at 11 a.m. Sunday. Spectators will be asked to donate $1 each for admission.
Native American dance competitions and exhibitions will be held at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today and at 1 p.m. Sunday. Spectators are asked to bring lawn chairs for seating.
The first-place winner of the Ladies Fancy Shawl Dance Contest will win $1,000. The second- through sixth-place winners will take home $100 each.
The staff for this year’s powwow includes Dana LaQuay of Pittsburgh, Penn., as master of ceremonies, and Darsh DeSilva of Round Rock, Texas as arena director.
The head singer (southern drum) will be John Arkeketa of Tahlequah, Okla. Greg Boone of Laurel will be head man dancer and Judie Aitken of Indianapolis, Ind., will be the head lady dancer.
Kevin Fields of Weleetka, Okla., will serve as the head gourd dancer. Northern drum guests will be the Tokala Singers, featuring head singer David Deschenes.
Boy Scout Troop 157 of Natchez will be in charge of raffles.
