A Natchez woman was listed in guarded but stable condition Monday after her vehicle ran over her as she apparently tried to stop it from rolling into the street.

Witnesses said Margaret Rowe, 309 Pearl St., was conscious while being transported by ambulance to Natchez Regional Medical Center, but she complaining of being unable to breath as tire marks showed evidence of where her Dodge Durango rolled over her abdomen.

Rob Nolan and Ron Burnette were working on a house next door also belonging to the Rowe family when they heard metal crunching and screaming and ran into the street.

Just a few seconds earlier, Burnette said he had seen Rowe pull into her driveway on Pearl Street and leave the engine running while she ran inside.

Her toddler grandson was strapped into a safety seat inside.

As she was climbing back into her vehicle, Rowe apparently released the parking brake, and the vehicle began to roll backward.

Whether Rowe was trying to stop the vehicle carrying her grandson from rolling into traffic or whether she was pushed along by the open driver’s door, Burnette said Rowe tripped, falling into the street, and the vehicle rolled over her midsection.

Before rolling to a stop, the runaway vehicle also caused minor damage to two other cars parked along Pearl Street.

Nolan said he used a cellular phone to call 911 while Rowe frantically asked if her grandchild was alright.
