VIDALIA, La. – For Jon Betts and Kathy Nunnery, weeks of walking the campaign trail will come to an end today, when voters decide which candidate will represent District 3 on the Vidalia Board of Aldermen.

&uot;As far as I&160;know, I’ve visited every resident in District 3 as of yesterday,&uot; Betts said. &uot;If I’ve missed anyone, it’s been by accident.&uot;

&uot;We’ve seen as many people as possible,&uot; Nunnery said. &uot;The campaign’s gone really well … but I’m kind of anxious to get it over with.&uot;

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the old and new courthouses on Carter Street and the Vidalia Fire Department on John Dale Drive.

Election results should be available by 9 p.m. at the latest, said Concordia Parish Clerk of Court Clyde Ray Webber.

&uot;This is such a small election, and it hasn’t gotten a lot of publicity,&uot; Webber said Friday. &uot;Still, voters in Vidalia are pretty civic-minded, so I’m expecting a turnout of 25 to 30 percent.&uot;

The post being decided today was left vacant when Alderman Bill Murray resigned Aug. 23, saying he wanted to build up his business so he can run for mayor in 2004. Since then, Guylyn Boles has served as interim alderwoman.

District 3, which is also represented by Ricky Knapp and Maureen &uot;Mo&uot; Saunders, has 2,083 registered voters.

The Vidalia aldermen’s race is the only contest to be decided today, since candidates are running unopposed for Town of Ridgecrest seats.

Attorney Guy Lain was the only candidate to qualify to run for the Ridgecrest mayor’s post. Lain served as interim mayor to fill he unexpired term of David Cobb, who resigned in November due to scheduling conflicts with his full-time job.

Incumbent Ridgecrest aldermen James Cowan and Tony Whittington are unopposed for seats on that town’s Board of Aldermen.
