JONESVILLE, La. – In the most important game of the season to this point the Vidalia Vikings put together one of their most complete games.
The Vikings combined clutch hitting with some outstanding pitching and defense in a 13-2 road win over Block on Thursday.
The two teams entered the contest undefeated in district action.
&uot;I was really impressed with Block,&uot; Vidalia skipper Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;They are a much different club than they have been in past years. Thankfully, we were able to withstand that first adrenaline push they had, and we played well.&uot;
Three runs in the top of the first helped Vidalia set the tone for the contests, and that would be all the runs Viking starter Barry Bowden would need.
&uot;Barry really needed a strong outing,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;He needed to get his confidence up, and this was just the type of game that should do that for him.&uot;
Bowden went the distance and allowed only one earned run and just three hits.
The Viking offense was productive all afternoon as it batted around in three of the five innings. Vidalia scored five runs in the top of the fourth to push its lead to 8-1 with the big hits coming on a 2-RBI single by Bubba Wyles and a 2-RBI single by Ryan Boles.
Jarrett Hoffpauir added his tenth home run of the year in the top of the fifth as the Vikings pushed the lead to 13-1.
Vidalia is now 17-3 year and a perfect 4-0 in the district. Block fell to 10-7, 2-1 in the district.
