VIDALIA, La. – Vidalia’s 11-2 win over McCall on Friday sets up a big week of district games for Johnny Lee Hoffpauir’s Vikings.

The win over McCall clinches at least a second place finish in the district for the Vikings, and a win on Tuesday at home against Block would give Vidalia the district championship. A loss to the Bears would leave the two teams tied for first place, forcing a one-game playoff to determine the district championship if the Vikings go on to beat Crowville in the regular season finale on Thursday. Losses in both games would give Block the district title.

&uot;The Block game on Tuesday will certainly be the biggest game we have played up to this point,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;We have played all this time, and it all comes down to this one game.&uot;

The 11-2 win on Friday was much closer than anticipated due to the Vikings’ 22-10 win over McCall just a few short weeks ago.

&uot;We played pretty well in the first couple of innings, but I though we lost our intensity at the plate as the game went on,&uot; Hoffpauir said. &uot;I just think we lost our concentration.&uot;

Even with the lack of hitting the Vikings were never in danger thanks to the surprising play of sophomore pitcher Trey White.

The lefty allowed only two runs on just two hits before giving way to Jarrett Hoffpauir in the sixth.

&uot;This was his (White’s) first start in a varsity game, and I thought he did an outstanding job,&uot; Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &uot;If he keeps working he could really help us over the next couple of years.&uot;

The Vikings gave White a nice cushion to start the game when they scored five runs in the top of the first.

Jarrett Hoffpauir got the inning started with a leadoff triple, and he scored the first run of the game on a RBI single by Bubba Wyles.

Bryan Bennett followed with a single to set the stage for a big three-run homer by Chris Williams.

McCall got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame on just one hit to cut the lead to 5-2, but that would be as close as it would get.

Hoffpauir pushed the lead to 6-2 with a solo homer in the second. The blast was his 15th of the season, and it broke the Vidalia single-season mark formerly held by Seth Greer. Bennett also homer in the second as Vidalia pushed its advantage to 8-2, and the Vikings coasted to the 11-2 win. Vidalia hosts Cathedral on Monday at 4:30 p.m. before hosting Block on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
