FERRIDAY, La. – Luke Davis had only two homers on the year heading into the District 5-A tournament championship game against Amite School Center.

He doubled his total on Friday with two long balls against the Rebels as Huntington beat Amite 11-6 to go through the tournament undefeated.

&uot;He (Davis) is a senior, and this is the time of the year when you need your seniors to step up,&uot; Huntington head coach Mitch Ashmore said. &uot;We really hit well throughout the lineup tonight. Amite has a good team, and it is quite an accomplishment to beat them for the fourth time this year.&uot;

While the Hounds were in little danger in the late innings against the Rebels, things didn’t look good in the top of the first.

The first three Rebels to come to the plate scored as Amite jumped in front 3-0. Huntington bounced back in the bottom of the first as Davis hit his first homer, and Crawford Kifer added a 2-RBI single to help the Hounds move in front 4-3.

The third inning proved to be the difference as the Hounds pounded out five hits and scored 6 runs in the frame to move in front 10-3. The big hit was a three-run homer by Davis. The win gives the Hounds a No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the MPSA playoffs. They will play the winner of the best of three series between Riverdale and Franklin Academy in two weeks.

&uot;We are glad to win this tournament, and I told our kids to enjoy it, but we have our sights set on a higher goal,&uot; Ashmore said. &uot;We will use the week off to get rested and work on some of the fundamental type things you don’t get a chance to work on when you are playing all the time.&uot;
