Fair weather greets Mayfair tennis

The 2001 Trinity Mayfair Tennis Tournament held Saturday at the Duncan Park tennis courts had many ups – good competition, some tough matches and beautiful weather – and, unfortunately, a few downs – no-shows and forfeits.

While the majority of the no-shows and forfeits occurred in the men’s doubles round-robin brackets, the members of the two teams that were scheduled to face each other for the consolation winners in the Women’s Doubles 6.5 bracket – Leslie Higginbotham and Loi Swoope versus Annette Cader and Kathy Chapman – did not show up for their match.

Leslie Middleton and Betsy Hungerford defeated Lori Lei Lessley, 6-3, 6-2 in the finals of the Women’s Doubles 5.5 bracket.

&uot;The competition was good,&uot; Middleton said. &uot;It was fun for us because we played sports together when we were in high school at Trinity.&uot;

&uot;It was very entertaining,&uot; said Hungerford about the tournament. &uot;The last match was pretty tough.&uot;

Rhonda Finch and Marlyn Sandifer defeated Lisa Moise and Nancy McLemore, 6-3, 6-4 in the Women’s Doubles 5.5 consolation finals.

Jeannie Peabody and Kirby Watts defeated Mary Ruth Caldwell and Peggy Mayberry, 7-5, 6-7, 10-8 (third-set tiebreaker) in the Women’s Doubles 6.5 finals.

&uot;Everybody was playing very well,&uot; Peabody said. &uot;It seesawed back and forth. Nobody had an advantage. Everybody was aggressive.&uot;

Eighteen-year-old Stephen Carter and 20-year-old Richard White, both of Natchez and both of whom attend Copiah Lincoln Community College in Wesson, won all three of their matches to win the Men’s Doubles 3.5 Round-Robin division.

&uot;We hung in there and pulled them out,&uot; Carter said.

Ralph LeMay and Robert Dunn won all three of their matches to win the Men’s Doubles 4.0 Round-Robin division.

&uot;I was hoping we would play only two matches,&uot; Dunn jokingly said. &uot;It was good competition. We won the second match in a third-set tiebreaker (def. Adam Cardneaux and John Moffett, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9). That’s what won it for us.&uot;

&uot;We were going to play in the seniors, but they didn’t have one,&uot; LeMay said.
