Austin Weeks may have had the best &uot;career night&uot; any 11- and 12-year old Wallace League/Ace-Adams League player has ever had.
Last night at Carroll Jones Field, Weeks – a Wallace League All Star – pitched a four-hit shutout versus the Ace-Adams all Stars and clubbed a grand slam to lead his squad to a 7-0 victory. The two-out, first-pitch slam in the bottom of the fifth was Weeks first career home run.
&uot;We didn’t have a big lead,&uot; said Weeks. &uot;He threw my pitch inside, belt-high and I turned on it.&uot;
Weeks also pitched a great game. In addition to the four hits, he only walked one batter, while striking out three. He also got out of a jam in the fourth to preserve a 2-0 lead. After Nick Blain singled to right-center and Blayne Floyd slapped one to left-center, Weeks retired the next three batters on a pop-up, a lineout and a ground out.
&uot;I worked the inside and outside corners, and I was getting my curve balls over,&uot; Weeks said.
Weeks’ defense also held up behind him, committing only one error.
&uot;We played good defense,&uot; said Wallace coach Brad Fondren. &uot;Finally, we were blessed with a day we could watch the boys play.&uot;
Fondren was referring to the constant afternoon/evening showers that have plagued local teams from not taking the field.
Floyd pitched well for the Ace-Adams team. He yielded five hits and three runs through four and two-thirds innings before the grand slam.
The Wallace league tallied two runs in the first inning. Jeremy Ellis walked and Brian Sanderson, who was two for two with two runs scored, laced a double to right-center. Ellis scored on an errant throw, and Sanderson crossed home on a groundout by Dustin Carroll to give the Wallace All Stars a 2-0 lead.
Both tams will be in action this weekend at the sub-district tournament, which will be held at Carroll Jones Field.
The Ace-Adams All Stars take on Franklin County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
The Wallace All Stars drew a bye in the first round. They will play the winner of the Clairborne County/Pine Hills game at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
