Man charged in assault, caught after brief chase

FERRIDAY, La. – A man charged in connection with an assault Wednesday afternoon was caught one hour later after leading Ferriday police on a brief chase.

Wendell T. Brown Jr., 20, of 207 Carolina Ave. in Ferriday, is accused of stabbing 21-year-old Ben Harris of 117 Weaver St. in Ferriday in the hand and punching Harris in the mouth, said Police Chief Bobby Sheppard. The incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday on South Seventh Street. Harris was treated at Riverland Medical Center and released later Wednesday.

Police do not yet know what type of weapon was used in the stabbing. At 3:17 p.m. that same day, two Ferriday police officers spotted Brown near the intersection of Louisiana 15 and Delaware Avenue. Brown fled on foot to South 10th Street, where he was caught by officers as he attempted to hide under a house, Sheppard said.

Brown was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and flight from an officer.
