Huntington pulls out pair

PORT GIBSON – After getting off to a 1-7 start, perhaps the only thing that can turn things around for the Huntington Lady Hounds is district play.
And they got things going Tuesday night as the easily defeated the Chamberlain-Hunt Lady Wildcats 60-16 in the MPSA District 5-1A opener for both teams.
Sarah Ashmore led Huntington with 16 points, Emily Hazlip had 15 points and Tiffany Ferguson added 13 points.
This game was over in the first quarter as the Lady Hounds held the Lady Wildcats to six points while scoring 26 points themselves in the quarter.
Things only got worse for the Lady Wildcats, who were held to just two points in the second and third quarters as the Lady Hounds cruised to the victory. Hannah Bullen and Sarah Burrell scored six points each for the Lady Wildcats.
Huntington 56, Chamberlain-Hunt 52 Jordan Owens scored 20 points as the Hounds overcame a one-point halftime deficit to defeat the Wildcats in Port Gibson.
Huntington (2-4, 1-0) trailed 14-12 after the first quarter and 28-27 at halftime before rallying to take the win.
Josh Johns chipped in with 11 points for the Hounds.
Demarcus Polk scored 15 points and Kendrick Newsome had 14 points for the Wildcats Huntington continues district play with a four-game set at Pine Hills at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Ferriday 65, Newellton 53 Lakendrick Nix came back from a shoulder injury he suffered in last week’s Vidalia Tournament to score 18 points as the Trojans came back from nine points down at halftime to take the win at Newellton, La.
Ladrian Davis and Calvin Thomas added 17 points apiece as the Trojans improved to 5-2 on the season.
Ferriday trailed 37-28 at the half, then held Newellton to nine points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.
Chris Snowden led Newellton with 21 points. The Trojans will face Jefferson County in the Natchez High Hoops Classic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Newellton 67, Ferriday 63 Amanda Gales scores 27 points as the Lady Bears avenged their 75-50 loss to Ferriday in the girls title game of the Vidalia Tournament by handing the Lady Trojans their first loss of the season at Newellton, La.
Kimberly Brown had 13 points and Crystal Dorsey added 12 points as the Lady Bears improved to 6-3 on the season.
Newellton led Ferriday (5-1) 38-21 at halftime and held off a furious second-half rally by the Lady Trojans to hold on for the win.
Monique Jones led Ferriday with 22 points and Lashawnda Pryor and Torisheka Taylor had 16 points each.
The Lady Trojans face Jefferson County in the Natchez High Hoops Classic at 6 p.m. Thursday.
