NATCHEZ – Brookhaven Academy’s varsity basketball swept a pair of games from Adams County Christian School Thursday night at Rebel gym in Natchez.

Lady Cougars 37, Lady Rebels 26

The last time these two teams met at this site, the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Rebels 13-4 in the fourth quarter to take a 41-32 win in the ACCS Girls Tip-Off Tournament.

On this night, they didn’t need to wait that long to record the win.

The first half was a low-scoring, defensive battle, with the Lady Rebels (4-5) scoring just two points in the opening quarter. The Lady Cougars didn’t fare too much better, scoring five points.

By halftime they led by a score of 14-8. Thanks to Ancy Myers, who scored six of her team-high eight points in the second half, the Lady Cougars were to put the game out of reach. Free throws were the key factor in the game. The Lady Cougars were 13-for-20 from the line; the Lady Rebels just 1-for-4.

Anna Gatlin and Angie Davis added seven points each for the Lady Cougars.

Kittye Marks led the Lady Rebels with nine points and Nikki Hankins added five points, all in the second half.

Cougars 46, Rebels 36

Turnovers and the play of the Cougars’ Paul Coker proved to be too much for the Rebels to overcome. The Rebels (1-4) led 26-23 at halftime and 30-27 in the third quarter, only to see Coker spark a 13-2 run late in the third and into the fourth quarter. Coker finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Cougars (4-1).

&uot;He’s a big guy. He gets good position,&uot; said ACCS’s Christopher Rayborn. &uot;He’s a good player.&uot;

Ty Smith had nine points, all in the first half, and 12 rebounds. Garrett Gamberi and Glenn Williams had seven points each. &uot;They’re a good ball team. We did a good job, just got a little tired in the fourth quarter,&uot; Smith said. Gamberi and Hunter Halford each hit a pair of three-pointers that helped give the Rebels their lead at the half.

At one point, the Rebels were 4-for-7 from behind the arch, then finished 5-16. They also committed 18 turnovers – 10 in the second half – and took only three shots in the final quarter.

ACCS plays at Parklane for six games at 12 p.m. Saturday.
