VHS slayed by powerful Dragons

NEWELLTON, La. – An untimely offensive lull by Vidalia in the third quarter and timely free throw shooting by McCall in the fourth quarter gave the Dragons a 65-58 win over the Vikings Thursday night in the second round of the Newellton Tournament.
Courtney Davis scored 25 points for McCall (12-1) to lead all scorers. Bryon Williams added 17 points.
Despite 21 points from Ajay Warner and 14 from Jessie Banks, Vidalia dropped to 13-2.
McCall outscored Vidalia 18-11 in the third quarter to break a 33-all score at halftime.
&uot;The difference in the game was that we had a slow third quarter,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders. &uot;In the fourth quarter they hit the free throws and we didn’t.&uot;
Vidalia led by one at one point in the fourth quarter, but, as Sanders said, &uot;free throws made the difference.&uot;
Vidalia next plays at Newellton at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 31.
WOODVILLE – The Ferriday Lady Trojans had little problem in defeating the Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats 78-45.
Monique Jones led Ferriday (11-3) with 28 points and Torisheka Taylor chipped in with 19.
Samantha Sherman led the Lady Wildcats (4-8) with 19 points, but she was the only player on the team to score in double figures.
The Lady Trojans scored 20 or more points in each of the first three quarters.
Wildcats 46, Trojans 42
Bryant Spiller and Charlie Spiller scored 10 points apiece as the Wildcats (8-6) held on to defeat the Trojans.
Jackie Thomas led Ferriday (7-7) with 16 points and LaKendrick Nix added 10 points.
Ferriday scored just two points in the first quarter and its second-half rally came up a little short.
Ferriday hosts Sicily Island next Friday.
