NATCHEZ – The cause of a fire that destroyed a house at Smith Street and Martin Lane Saturday night was still under investigation late Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

&uot;We may know something by tomorrow (Christmas Eve),&uot; Cmdr. Stan Owens of the Natchez Fire Department said Sunday.

The house’s owner, the Rev. T.M. Smith said Saturday night that he believes that he fire was started by a man that wanted to stay in a room of Smith’s house for the night.

No arrests had been made in connection with the fire late Sunday afternoon.
