WOODVILLE &045; Maybe a thank-you card is in order.

They call it the WCCA Shootout, but coaches just call it a great chance to play a couple games and get back in playing shape following the holidays.

Huntington’s Hounds did just that. After taking an impressive win over Silliman Friday, they followed with a 45-38 win over Centreville Saturday.

The win put the Hounds at 7-8 on the season and has things looking up after a sluggish start.

&uot;We have a chance to get back to .500,&uot; Huntington head coach Michael McAnally said. &uot;We’re trying to get this thing turned around.&uot;

But the game certainly wasn’t devoid of drama. Even though the Hounds jumped out to a big lead and held on late, the Tigers held a 13-9 edge in the fourth thanks to Huntington’s 1-of-11 effort from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

The Hounds hit just three of 19 for the game.

&uot;We should have put the game away sooner,&uot; McAnally said. &uot;We were very fortunate to get a win. Obviously you’ve got to make free throws down the stretch, and that’s something we work on every day. Until you get in that pressure situation, it’s hard to simulate it in practice.&uot;

The Hounds led 8-4 after one and 22-14 at half before outscoring Centreville 14-11 in the third to lead 36-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Hounds got another big night from Jordan Owens as he led the team in scoring with 16. Owens finished with 29 Friday against Silliman.

The post-holiday blues continue for the Lady Hounds, who dropped their second game in as many days Saturday.

This time the Lady Tigers used a strong second half to take the win and kept Huntington (12-6) struggling on the offensive end.

&uot;We really struggled scoring tonight,&uot; McAnally said. &uot;Shooting-wise, we were 15 of 59. We just missed way too many easy shots to beat a good team like Centreville.&uot;

The Lady Tigers led 28-22 heading into the fourth quarter and increased their lead to 10 at one point before McAnally called a timeout. From there the Lady Hounds cut the lead to one but couldn’t get ahead on the scoreboard.

Jenny Watts led Centreville with 21 points. Sarah Ashmore led Huntington with 12.

Speaking of post-holiday blues, the Adams County Christian School girls were rusty in their first game back from the break.

Although the Lady Rebels welcomed back the services of Nikki Hankins, they struggled most of the way scoring before falling by 30 points.

&uot;We didn’t play very well,&uot; ACCS head coach Bruce Pickle said. &uot;We didn’t practice but twice over the holidays. We missed probably 20 shots under the goal. The first quarter we had open shots and couldn’t throw it in the ocean.&uot;

The Lady Rebels had their best quarter in the second after falling behind 11-3 after the first. Both teams scored 11 in the second, but OFA answered with a 14-4 edge in the third to lead 36-18 heading into the fourth quarter.

Brennan Fitzgerald led Oak Forest with 25 points. Anna McLemore led AC with nine.

The third quarter sometimes can make all the difference in the world.

Take Trinity Episcopal, who led Silliman 37-22 at halftime. Sound comfortable, right?

That’s when the Saints motored to a 26-9 advantage in the third quarter to take a 63-31 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Dudley Guice Jr. led the Saints with 18 points, while Chad Fontenot led Silliman with 14.

The Lady Bobcats’ defense held Trinity leading scorer Mallory Archer scoreless, and it showed.

The Lady Saints struggled to put it in the hole, and Presbyterian ran away with the win &045; thanks in part to a 24-0 run in the second quarter for a 37-4 halftime lead.

Suzannah Ketchings led Trinity with six points. The Lady Bobcats had three in double figures with Mallory Lee tops with 15 points.

WCCA girls 53, BGA 35

The Lady Rams exploded in the second quarter with 24 points to the Lady Bucs’ six to take a 33-18 halftime lead.

And it was out of reach after that for Bowling Green.

Caroline Kee led WCCA with 23 points. Bowling Green’s top scorer was Victoria Seal with eight.

BGA boys 53, WCCA 49

The Rams fought back after a disastrous second quarter where Bowling Green held a 16-9 edge for a 23-19 halftime lead.

The Buccaneers, however, answered with a 15-12 edge in the third to lead 38-31 heading into the fourth. There the Rams played well and held an 18-15 edge, but it wasn’t enough.

Cody Wise led Bowling Green with 25. Jason Reed led WCCA with 24 points.
