Clinton downs Natchez; JC wins big

CLINTON &045; The Clinton Arrows got 15 points each from Jenario Burton and Sernell Williams as they stayed in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the Division 4-5A tournament with a 54-37 win over the Natchez High Bulldogs.

With the win, Clinton improved to 13-11 overall, but more importantly 3-2 in division play with one game to go. The Arrows went into Friday night’s game against Natchez tied for second in the division with Warren Central.

Natchez (8-15, 1-5) went into the second quarter trailing just 15-11, but Clinton got defensive in that quarter and outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 to extend its lead to 12 points, 29-17, at halftime.

Charles Cothern led NHS with 11 points.

Jefferson County 63, North Pike 47

SUMMIT &045; Had it not been for the second and fourth quarters, the outcome of this Division 7-3A contest would have been a lot closer than it ended up being as the Tigers took a 16-point win Friday night.

Dewones Smith led Jefferson County with 21 points. Joshfer Nichols added 19 points and Juan Wyatt had 12 points.

The Tigers trailed the Jaguars (11-11, 2-9) 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, but took the lead for good in the second quarter as they outscored the Jaguars 21-14 to take a 34-28 halftime lead.

Huntington 73, Pine Hills 17

GLOSTER &045; As if the first quarter wasn’t bad enough for the Wildcats, the second quarter turned out to be even worse as the Hounds cruised to a 56-point win in an MPSA District 7-1A game Friday night.

Huntington (12-11, 8-3) took a 16-2 lead after one and then shut out Pine Hills (1-22, 0-11) in the second for a 37-2 halftime lead.

Jordan Owens and Josh Olds scored 20 points each to lead Huntington. Jonathan Latham led Pine Hills with seven points.

Amite County 46, Wilkinson County 41

LIBERTY &045; In an important Division 7-3A game for both teams, the Wildcats took a 29-22 halftime and then increased their lead to 13 points &045; only to see that lead, and perhaps the top seed in the division tournament, get away from them.

&uot;We dominated the first half,&uot; Wildcats head coach Henry Storey said. &uot;From the 4:00 mark of the third quarter to the end of the game Amite County dominated. We missed too many easy shots and free throws.&uot;

Wilkinson County (20-7, 7-4) turned a one-point deficit after one quarter into the seven-point halftime lead when its defense stepped up and held Amite County (11-8, 8-2) to just seven points in the quarter.

Trinity 72, Amite School Center 24

LIBERTY &045; Coach David King continues to empty his bench in MPSA district 7-A play and even his backups can hold their own.

Dudley Guice Jr. led all scorers with 15, but Wyatt Craig came off the bench with a strong 13 points as the Saints (24-5, 11-0 7-A) remain unbeaten in district.

Tensas 46, WCCA 23

WOODVILLE &045; An explosive 23-9 third period from the Chiefs washed away in hopes WCCA had of pulling off the upset.

Tyler White led all scorers with 10 points, with Ryan Borsch and Matthew Bauerle contributing 9 and 8, respectively, for Tensas.

Jason Reed and Gil Bryant led the Rams with 8 points each.

Franklin County 72, Enterprise 44

MEADVILLE &045; Twelve Bulldogs played and scored in the late season non-division win over Enterprise.

Three Franklin County players hit double digits in scoring with Bobby Henderson’ 13 pacing the Bulldogs. Zack Thomas and Anthony Wilcher chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively.
